Apple Safari for Windows

Safari for Windows is another product which shows Apple’s intention to gradually muscle into PC users’ domain. The browser is as fast as Firefox-if not faster. It has some attributes like spell check and fully Unicode compliance which were unavailable in Firefox. But for non-English speaking countries, Safari would still be a secondary browser as it doesn’t allow its users to add new fonts to read foreign scripts. Internet explorer is the only browser which allows this option at the moment. Firefox is a very secured browser. Only time will tell whether Safari would be as safe a browser as Firefox or not. The Safari interface allows to play with the tabbed browsing as well. But it’s not a major breakthrough and won’t change the internet using experience a great deal. Firefox enjoys a backing of lot of performance enhancing add-ons. I failed to find such interesting add-ons for Safari on the Apple website.

Jooce.com: Personal desktop on the web

Today I have discovered the website Jooce.com , the website provides to build a virtual desktop pc environment for its subscribers. Offered by Luxembourg-based start-up Jooce, it is being billed as a way of personalising any computer. Jooce is targeting the estimated 500 million people who log on to the internet from a cybercafé every day. I have been using the website for past couple of days to check its usability. I am not yet 100% impressed with its service. The website requires a very high bandwidth connection which is not available in most of the developing countries where most of the cybercafés are. I was quite frequently getting disconnected while uploading my documents to the website's server. The folder options are quite good-easy to organise. The website has its own media player to play music and videos. So, the users don't need to rely on the cybercafés' media players. The website also allows its users to log on to popular instant messenger through its server. I ...

Perfspot.com

I have discovered a social networking site today. The site is www.perfspot.com . Apparently it is the fastest growing social networking site right now. I am not entirely convinced that this can overtake facebook and become the number one just yet with its current look and networking facilities. It offers most of the usual features of social networking, including newsfeeds, customisable profile options and the option of linking photos to other users' profiles plus unlimited space to upload images and videos. It also provides an URL for the user which is also common features in hi5, myspace and the likes. It does, however, have some extra features which are not available in facebook. For example, it lets the user create his/her own network which wasn’t available in the facebook. This gives the users outside the developed world to include their education and work networks in the site.

Revolution in Bangla typing

I have long been waiting to learn to type in Bangla. Being brought up in Bangladesh in the earlier part of my life, I have always held a soft corner in my heart for the Bangla language. I was looking for typing software which would allow me to express my thoughts in Bangla. I went to Dhaka and went through the shops in the famous BCS Computer City in Agargaon. The only typing software I could find was based on ‘Bijoy’ keyboard. ‘Bijoy’ keyboard is a very complex keyboard layout which would’ve taken me a long time to learn and master. I was looking for something quicker. Few days ago, I just randomly did a search on Google on Bangla keyboards and discovered the ‘Masterpiece’. It’s the ‘ Avro ’ Keyboard by Omicronlab. It was available for free and I downloaded it from the link from www.download.com . I was really happy to find out that the software follows English (Roman) phonetic typing rather than using a new keyboard layout. This was really helpful for me as I didn’t have to l...

Bangladesh has been regarded as the garment capital of the world for the past decade. Dhaka being the capital city of Bangladesh, has been experiencing a huge influx of investors and job seekers from around the globe. The website consists of 5 different sections sheding light on the immigration, transport, accommodation, health tips, list of shopping malls, places to go and the emergency and utility contact details. The website also has a guestbook which can also be used as a blog for the travellers.

T-Mobile USB Modem

I have bought a T-Mobile USB modem yesterday. Mohib helped me to get the modem. Got it working this morning. It's brilliant! Now I don't need an internet connection for browsing internet. I can take my laptop anywhere in the country and browse from anywhere I like. Don't know if I'm sounding like a geek but this really is amazing. I am getting really good speed as well. Broadband internet seems sooo yesterday now..

Intranets and portals as agents of change in an organisation

Abstract The present paper is an analysis of three case studies of intranet and intranet based portal initiatives in different types of organisations. The general aim of the study was to investigate how intranet and portals contribute to the change in performance and culture of private and public sector organisations and in academic environment. In order to do this the author conducted research on 3 different case studies involving four different organisations with a focus on, among other things, identifying the change of performance and culture posed by intranet and portal.
