A day in Dhaka

Went to Gulshan today to open an Bangladesh International account at HSBC gulshan branch. Not impressed with the service, staff were ok, but I think they are yet to know the bits and bobs of banking of international standard.

Met Zahir, Miraz and Mazed outside Pizza Hut in gulshan. Had a good laugh.

In the afternoon went to buy an air conditioner for the house, bought a 22000 BTU air conditioner for my mum. It cost me 36500 taka plus 2000 taka for installation. Also liked a 800 watt microwave oven, so bought that for 8200 taka too.

My Khalamoni and Khalu came over in the evening, had a small family get together.

The possibilities and limitations for transferring Japanese lean production work practices to British institutional environment

Introduction: ‘Lean production system’ is a very popular generic mass production management system. It is also known as ‘Toyota Production System’. Lean system develops highly responsive systems whereby companies produce “goods and services exactly when they are needed: not before they are needed so that they wait as inventory, nor after they are needed so that it is the customers who have to wait”. (Slack, 2001) It is based on three key principles, eliminate waste, involving everyone and continuous improvement. The lean system was developed by Taiichi Ohno at Toyota in the 1950s. Taiichi was a manufacturing manager and was facing difficulties because of poor supply conditions. He couldn’t plan ahead as he couldn’t predict the supply of raw materials.
